Barbary fig, also called cactus pear or prickly pear, is a CAM succulent grown for its fruit (tuna), its young pads eaten as a vegetable (nopalitos), and as drought-reserve livestock fodder. It is a staple of the arid Mediterranean and North African landscape — Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt — and originates in Mexico, still the largest producer and consumer. Its defining agronomic property is that it yields on land where conventional crops fail: it is used to rehabilitate degraded land, and in parts of Ethiopia it is the crop relied on when everything else fails. Cladodes are also the historic host of the cochineal insect, the source of carmine dye.

Do NOT irrigate it like a conventional fruit crop. It is a CAM plant that fixes carbon at night with stomata closed by day, so its water demand is a fraction of a C3 crop of the same canopy — over-watering is the common failure, not drought.

Wet cold kills it far faster than dry cold. It survives to roughly -8 C when dry and dormant, so excellent drainage and stopping irrigation from autumn matter more than the absolute winter minimum.

Cochineal is both the historic prize and the modern plague: Dactylopius coccus was farmed on these pads for carmine dye, while D. opuntiae has devastated plantations across North Africa. Scout for the white waxy masses early — an infested plantation is very hard to recover.

Planting density is a choice between products: a wide traditional stand of about 2,500 plants/ha favours fruit, while very dense stands maximise cladode biomass for fodder and push peak fruit into the third year.
