Gooseberry Growing Guide

Gooseberry is a thorny temperate bush fruit of the genus Ribes, grown for large dessert berries and for cooking, processing and freezing. Commercial cultivars split into two groups from two different species: European gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa, syn. R. grossularia), which carries the largest fruit, and American gooseberry (Ribes hirtellum), whose berries are smaller but which is markedly more mildew-resistant and generally healthier and more productive. Like all Ribes it is an alternate host of white pine blister rust, so its planting is legally restricted in parts of the United States.

Growing Tips

The variety choice IS the disease decision. Large-fruited European cultivars (Ribes uva-crispa) are the susceptible side of American gooseberry mildew, which cut gooseberry acreage sharply after 1905; American-group cultivars (R. hirtellum) give smaller fruit but far better resistance and productivity.

CHECK THE LAW BEFORE PLANTING IN THE UNITED STATES. Like all Ribes this hosts white pine blister rust; a federal ban ran 1911-1966, New York lifted the last state ban only in 2003, Maine still runs an eradication programme and some states still bar importing plants.

Most cultivars are thorny, which sets the labour cost of hand-picking dessert grade. Thornless breeding exists precisely because of that; check it before committing to a fresh-market block.
