De-hulled glabrous (hairless) varieties were approved for human food in both Canada and the United States in early 2016 and are sold under the Spanish name alpiste. Agronomically it behaves like a shallow-rooted spring cereal on a wheat-length season, but it is more heat-sensitive and less drought- and salt-tolerant than wheat, and performs poorly on sandy soils.
