Phytophthora root rot is the number one killer of avocado trees. Plant only on well-drained soils and never allow water to pool around the trunk.
Avocado trees bear fruit on new growth; avoid heavy pruning which removes fruiting wood and can eliminate an entire year's crop.
Mulch heavily with coarse organic material out to the drip line, but keep mulch 15 cm away from the trunk to prevent crown rot.
