How to Calculate Farm Break-Even
The farm break-even point is the yield or price at which your revenue exactly covers your production costs — zero profit, zero loss. Understanding break-even is the single most important step in farm financial planning, because it defines the floor below which your crop becomes unprofitable.
The Two Break-Even Formulas
- Break-Even Price = Total Production Costs ÷ Total Expected Yield. Use this when you know your agronomic yield potential and want to understand the minimum price you need to negotiate.
- Break-Even Yield (per hectare) = Total Production Costs ÷ (Expected Price × Area). Use this when you have a forward contract or reliable market price and want to know the minimum yield target.
Why Sensitivity Analysis Matters
Farming never goes exactly to plan. A 10% yield drop from drought, or a 10% price drop from a good regional harvest, can wipe out a thin safety margin.
